Discipleship Guide: Walking in His Footsteps

Learning to Live and Minister Like Jesus

You sit on a damp park bench during your lunch break. The grey drizzle starts to fall. You look at your watch. Your break ends in five minutes. Your mind races with thoughts of the afternoon spreadsheet, the school run, and the broken boiler at home. You feel a heavy weight on your shoulders. You scroll through your phone to find an escape. You see photos of people living seemingly perfect lives. You close the app. You feel even more tired than before.

We often feel like we are just surviving. We move from one task to the next. We try our best to keep our heads above water. We want to live like Jesus. We read about His miraculous life in our Bibles. We see Him heal the sick. We see Him speak with authority. He seems like a distant hero. He feels like a character in a holy book. We think His life is out of reach for ordinary people like us. We assume we can only hope for a quiet life now and heaven when we die.

This view misses the beautiful reality of the gospel. Jesus didn’t come just to rescue you from hell. He came to show you how to live on earth. He laid aside His divine privileges. He lived as a real human being. He walked on dusty roads. He felt exhausted after a long day of travel. He experienced deep grief.

How did He do it? How did He walk in perfect peace? He didn’t use His own divine power. He relied entirely on the Holy Spirit.

Let us look at His baptism in the River Jordan. The heavens opened. The Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove. The Father spoke words of deep love. Before this moment, Jesus worked as a carpenter. He built tables. He swept up wood shavings. He lived a quiet, ordinary life in Nazareth. The Holy Spirit changed everything. The Spirit filled Him and empowered Him for action.

Peter tells us in Acts that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. Jesus went about doing good. He healed the sick. He set people free. He did this because God was with Him. He lived as a Spirit-filled human being.

You have that same Holy Spirit living inside you right now. You don’t need to live your faith in your own strength. Many of us try. We try to be patient with our children through sheer willpower. We try to love our difficult neighbours by gritting our teeth. We try to work hard at our jobs without complaining. We quickly burn out. We feel empty. We wonder why our faith feels so dry.

Stop trying to do it alone. The Holy Spirit wants to fill you today. He wants to give you His gifts. He wants to give you words of wisdom for your colleagues. He wants to release His healing power through your hands. You can walk into your workplace, your local school, or your local coffee shop with the exact same peace and power that Jesus had.

This month, we are launching a new Discipleship Guide. It is called Walking in His Footsteps: How to Copy the God-Man. This guide is a practical tool to help you step into the normal Christian life. It shows you how to move from just knowing about Jesus to actually copying Him in your daily life. Whether you are a student preparing for exams, a retiree enjoying a slower pace, a stay-at-home parent, or a busy professional, this guide is for you.

The guide focuses on four key areas of Jesus' life. We call these the DNA of a disciple.

First, you will explore the Power Source. You will learn how to stop relying on your own strength. You will discover how to open your life to the Holy Spirit every morning.

Second, you will look at the Secret Place. Jesus constantly withdrew to quiet places to pray. He prioritised His connection with the Father. You will learn how to set healthy boundaries. You will discover the power of fifteen minutes of silence each day.

Third, you will examine the Heart of the King. Jesus felt deep compassion for the hurting people around Him. He didn’t see people as distractions. He saw their pain, and He acted. You will learn how to pay attention to the people on your street. You will discover how to pray simple prayers for healing on the spot.

Fourth, you will learn about Passing It On. Jesus didn’t do ministry alone. He trained ordinary people. He shared His life with them. You will learn how to invite someone newer to the faith into your life. You will see how simple conversations over a cup of coffee can build the Kingdom of God.

We want this guide to be highly practical. You can use it in several ways.

If you prefer a daily rhythm, use the reflections each morning in your quiet place. Take ten minutes to read and listen.

If you meet in a small group, talk about your struggles and victories. Pray for one another to receive the Holy Spirit’s gifts.

If you prefer to walk with a friend, meet for coffee once a week. Work through one section together. Hold each other accountable. Share how you are putting these lessons into practice.

Don’t settle for a powerless, busy life. Don’t let the noise of the world drown out the voice of God. You can copy the Master. You can walk in His peace today.
